History
On June 5th and 6th, 2004 we held our first event, with the guidance of
the Iron Butt Association. Sixty-three riders finished the event and raised over
$22,000 that benefited heart-related charities. In April of 2005 we held our
second event with over 250 riders and raised $50,000. With the combined events
we have donated over $72,000 to both local and national charities including the
American Heart Association, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Loma Linda
Medical Center and the Arizona Heart Institute.
This year, 2006, our 1000 and 1500-mile rides held the first weekend in May
generated $43,000 with 230 riders.
The
success and overwhelming acceptance of this type of event by the riding
community encouraged us to continue with our charitable efforts. In
addition to its overwhelming acceptance and success, a personal objective also
drives the Foundation. Michael Moorhouse, RHF Executive Director, suffered
a heart attack in 2001 but survived thanks to medical advancements made possible
through ongoing research and education. In addition, knowing the warning
signs of a heart attack gave Michael an added edge to get medical attention
underway quickly as the heart attack began. This life-changing event
eventually initiated the Ride for the Heart Foundation and continues to fuel its
charitable and education efforts each day.
